Directors

Diego Raviglione,
Founding Artistic Director

With over 26 years of experience as a highly creative artistic hair designer and educator, Diego Raviglione exudes an unsurpassed enthusiasm and talent that impacts all those he inspires. His work has been published in top-tier, taste-making magazines such as Elle, Allure, InStyle, Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, and Elle Girl, as well as American Salon, Launchpad, Behind the Chair, Modern Salon, and other leading industry publications. Diego’s ingenuity has also been featured on the runways of LA Fashion Week and on stage at the edgy Lollapalooza concert series, where he served as head stylist to featured acts.

A true inspirational figure to both professional and aspiring stylists, Diego was named “Mentor of the Year” by Wella (2012) and guided team I.C.A.N. – a group of emerging talent – to first place at the RAW 2012 competition at Premiere in Orlando. Diego is also a three-time recipient of Bellus Academy’s “Visionary Award,” an honor that celebrates his influence as the institution’s Artistic Director. His cutting-edge curriculums and integration of Nick Berardi’s technologically advanced online program NickEducation with S.T.A.R. Precision Haircutting System, have been integral in equipping students with the skills crucial for success in the professional world. He has also been instrumental in placing graduating classes in the top 10% in the industry.

Diego was initially drawn to the artistic side of the beauty industry, appreciating the intimate connection between artist and client, and the instant results it yielded. He discovered the diverse, opportunities available, from salon professional, to educator, to brand ambassador – and making a profound difference on the future generations by shaping and molding the school industry was extremely appealing to him.

Diego was immediately attracted to Lynelle Lynch’s unique approach and vision for what a next generation of Cosmetology schools should be, which continues to fuel his passion as an Artistic Director today. He believes that the quality of educators, entrepreneurial spirit, team-sharing goals, competitions, extern programs, relationships with professional salons and the Wella corporation have all enabled Bellus to become the premier academy in the US.

Today, Diego draws his inspiration from the youth culture, the mastery of technique and the ongoing quest to mature and evolve as a stylist. From the conception and creation of new editorial collections, to the development of academies and curriculums, to seminars, international hair shows and in-salon education, he never settles for mediocrity and is a true inspiration for others. He feels that staying tied to the industry as both an educator and Artistic Director has been critical to the academy’s exceptional quality of education, lending profound credibility to graduates and enabling educators to bring their knowledge of the professional world to the classroom.

Diego is creatively inspired by Wella Trend Vision, which is based on the global trends. For 2013, the four major trends in hair are based on the luxurious opulent hair styles with blond rose gold tones and, exceptional shine; an east-meets-west fusion with faded pastels and bright strong tones and shapes inspired by eastern architecture; a 70’s influence with multi-dimensional textures and bright bold tones mixed with turquoise and rich browns; and aggressive shapes with disconnection accented with petroleum tones such as red and green, with violet tones for accent on muted brunette bases.

Joanne was first introduced to Bellus Academy in 2005 and then again in 2009. Today, her focus is to remain on the cutting-edge of technology, techniques and systems with evolving curriculums, ensuring that students are trained in the best services current for the industry.

At a high school career services lecture about beauty therapy, she felt a true connection and knew she had found her calling – she began her training at the young age of 15.

Early roles in Joanne’s career include beauty therapist, aesthetician, massage therapist, aromatherapist, and body treatment specialist. Later drawn to the business side, she then focused on management and sales, developing innovative marketing and advertising techniques, creating strategic plans, and designing unique signature spa treatments.

Leading international clients include the Intercontinental Hotel Group, Lumenis, and Astron Clinica. With a passion for educating others, she served as the Education Manager of Steiner Day Spa Division in San Diego and conducted extensive training and product seminars, taught 400+ staff all aspects of spa treatments and customer service, and oversaw spa services on 125 cruise ships with Steiner Management Services.

As Spa Director of the La Jolla Spa MD, under her direction the business earned the title of “Medical Spa of the Year” by American Spa Magazine. In 2006, Joanne launched Spa Remedies, a spa consultancy firm for clients seeking to build or refresh their current operation.

Joanne’s dynamic work and expertise have also been chronicled in Dermascope, Les Nouvelles Esthetiques, ISPA Magazine, and Tatler, and she has recently been nominated for inclusion in AIA’s prestigious “Academy of Legends” (2012). She is also regularly engaged to lecture at industry events such as the Spatec conference, the Aesthetic Medical Conference, the Santi Spa Conference, and the Professional Beauty conference in the U.K.

For 2013, Joanne predicts that telemore testing, the measurement of biological age, and inclusive health, a combination of skincare, nutrition and emotional care, will play larger roles in the spa industry. She also sees wellness tourism, mental wellness in spas, earthing, and health and wellness coaching as prominent trends.

For Carrera, a career in this industry meant creative freedom and the chance to help other people discover personal beauty – she knew that the sky was the limit in terms of opportunity. She was first introduced to Bellus Academy through other industry professionals and was highly impressed with its revolutionary approach to the way basic foundational skills were taught, the advanced course offerings and its distinctive culture. She appreciated that Bellus was elevated from the board-testing focus of traditional beauty schools and that its goals was to produce salon-ready professionals and future leaders in the industry.

Prior to joining Bellus Academy in 2010, Carrera earned her degree from the Vidal Sassoon School of Cosmetology in Santa Monica and excelled within the company over the course of 9 years. Kristina-Monique Cortez,
Director of Make-Up Artistry Programs

Kristina-Monique Cortez is a Professional Makeup-Artist and the founding educator of Bellus Academy’s Make-Up Artistry Program. At an early age, she had a profound sense that make-up enhanced beauty and she was entranced by the make-up she saw in movies like Funny Girl. Coupled with a passion for art and painting, this lead to her highly successful career as a make-up artist and educator, where uncovering the beauty of others is something that gives her great joy and enables her to continuously grow.

Throughout her career, Kristina-Monique has worked with industry giants such as MAC, MUD and Sebastian’s professional make-up line, Trucco. Her work and expertise have also appeared in Allure, Salon International-Mexico, PurseBuzz.com and other high-profile editorial channels.

Kristina-Monique joined Bellus Academy in 2006 as a Cosmetology educator but still held a true passion for the art of make-up. Wanting to remain a part of Bellus Academy’s progressive approach to education, she helped create the first-ever Make-Up Program in the San Diego area. For the past seven years, her role as Make-up Director has allowed her to motivate aspiring artists to embrace both the creative and business aspects of the make-up industry. She has inspired thousands of students under the philosophy that make-up artistry is the gateway to making others see themselves from a more attractive perspective. Like all Bellus Academy educators, she also still sees herself as a student of the beauty industry and constantly strives to find new ways to grow.

For 2013, Kristina-Monique expects to see more color-blocking, incorporating the pantone hue emerald. She suggests that for eyes, a thin line will keep it subtle while a thicker, winged eyeliner in green will be more dramatic.

CHRISTIE MADLANGBAYAN
DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS, EL CAJON

I have been working in Admissions since I have graduated in Sociology from University of California San Diego back in 2006.

I’m a military child who has been brought up in different areas around the US and lived in Japan and Guam, places my father had been stationed at.  Change to me was a good thing because I was able to adapt to my surroundings and learn new and different things. I knew that when I graduated I wanted to do something where my day would be different every day, meet new people and guide students into the right direction.

I’m the first point of contact for a student and I’m the one who gives you all the information you need to know to see if our school is the right fit for you.  I love what I do because I get to meet with new students on a daily, see their growth throughout our program, and watch them reach their potential goals by graduating in the Beauty and Wellness fields. I’m very easy going person and always willing to help others, so if you have any questions or concerns about programs we offer here at our Academy I’m the person to talk to!

ROBERTA ARCHER
COSMETOLOGY EDUCATOR, POWAY

Since 2004 I have had the privilege of working with the leaders of the beauty industry at Bellus Academy and although I have worked in this field for many years, I have learned so much and been inspired to continue my education.

After being a hairdresser since right out of high school, I decided to become an Instructor in 2004. I have enjoyed being with young people and love being able to share with them my knowledge and experience and motivate them to succeed.

Last year I was fortunate to be able to take the Esthetician Course at our Poway Campus and have since received my California State License and also obtained the ITEC International Diploma to go along with my ITEC Level 3 Hairdressing Diploma. I love my vocation as an Educator and the students are my number one priority. Seeing their progress and talent make my day on a regular basis.

Teaching Theory, especially the Sciences, has been very fulfilling for me and I have discovered that as I break it down for the students, they are able to assimilate it into their daily procedures and services. Understanding, rather than just memorizing enough to get them through the State Board Exam, is powerful. Motivating and Inspiring students to give their all to their education, has been the most rewarding experience over the past 9 years, as I've seen hundreds of young people graduate with a head full of knowledge and their hands capable of creating anything their imagination can see.

She was promoted to an educator role and took over duties of our senior success phase within our program. Her duties include preparing students for their state licensing exams, developing curriculum based on state board techniques and procedures and administering student mock boards. Since taking on this role Bellus Academy has seen improvements in current licensing rates and she has now become the academies trainer for this phase at all schools.  Lora looks forward to continued success and progression for her career and the careers of her students.
EMANUEL SAN MARTIN
COSMETOLOGY & BARBERING EDUCATOR, POWAY

From a very a young age I had the inclination to cut hair so in 2001 I enrolled in the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica, CA.  During my time there I was a exposed to a high standard of work that I always strive to maintain. Soon after graduating from school I began my professional career as an apprentice at the Sassoon salon in Beverly Hills CA where I trained to become a haircutting specialist.  My positive experience as a student would then lead me to realize that being an educator would be an excellent role for me. When the opportunity presented itself I jumped on it and in 2004 I became an instructor for Paul Mitchell the school.

During my time as an instructor I was able to achieve many of my goals as a cosmetologist such as working with a very talented team of educators who shared the same passion and excellence I did, to travel the world as an educator and teaching groups of professionals from other countries. Also working with cosmetology students that were dedicated to absorbing as much as they could was probably the most rewarding.

I have worked on many editorial shoots and some of my work has been published. I even have had my encounters with celebrity hair but what I truly enjoy the most is teaching. I have found a home at Bellus Academy and feel very proud to work here. The students come first and it is a priority that their education be of the highest level.

You can find me teaching Inspiration cutting here at Bellus where I will walk them thru the entire S.T.A.R. precision cutting program and prepare them for their next phase in their program. I also oversee the clinic floor and guide them through an entire service from start to finish.
Once again I am very proud to say I work for Bellus Academy.
