Ask any parent, “Would it make you happy if your child found their passion in life, and they decided that they are ready to pursue it with vigor?” They’d likely say, “YES!”
What we’ve learned is that, in our world, sometimes the conversation is much harder than that. Instead of support and excitement, students receive doubt and disappointment.
Bellus Academy wants to address this conversation. We want this exchange to be a great experience for potential students and their parents. So, we’re sharing some insights that, we hope, will quell fears.
Your kid is not a loser.
Some parents’ first thoughts when their child decides to go to cosmetology school instead of university is, “They’re never going to make it in the real world.”
There is no guarantee of a raving success in any occupation, and cosmetology is no exception. We know, that in the world of cosmo, the support of a parent or family member can make a huge difference. We’ve seen the results of having a family backing a student, it raises their likelihood of being great at what they do.
That is not to say that all parents think their child is a disappointment when they come to them with a dream of becoming a cosmetologist. We embrace the parents who take the opportunity to talk to their kids about working hard for what they want. We love to hear stories of parents being their cosmo kid’s personal cheerleaders throughout the whole program.
For the parents who worry that this is a poor choice in career, we want to tell you exactly why it’s not.
A Thriving Industry
The beauty industry is growing. Think of all the movies you’ve seen. The makeup, special effects or regular film, was done by a very successful cosmetologist. When you hear cosmetologist, don’t get stuck on the idea of your son or daughter being behind a chair in a salon in a strip mall. Some people might find that career to be incredibly rewarding, but that doesn’t mean everyone will. There can be more to cosmetology than that. Here are the facts:
The annual revenue of the cosmetic industry in the U.S. in 2016 was over $56 billion, according to statisticbrain.com.
According to the BLS, the job outlook for hairdressers, barbers, and cosmetologists is growing at a rate of 10% (faster than average) during the years 2014-24. The job outlook for manicurists and pedicurists is the same.
Thebalance.com reports that makeup artists’ jobs are projected to grow at a much faster rate than many occupations.
The BLS says that the top 90% of makeup artists in 2015 made an annual wage over $100,000.
California is the state with the highest employment levels for makeup artists, via the BLS.
Licensed cosmetologists can work in a variety of positions:
High-end Salon Hairdresser
Personal Makeup Artist
Beauty Sales Representative
Beauty Magazine Editor
And several others
The job opportunities for a licensed cosmetologist are almost endless. Wherever your child wants to be, they have the chance if they put in the time and master the skills.

A Place for Artists
Cosmetology creates a safe place for students who are creative, unique, visual, imaginative, inventive, smart, detail-oriented, and all around amazing, to be themselves. These are traits any parent should be proud of. There is no one else quite like your child. This is the place to let their dreams come true.
Parents: please accept your student. Create an environment that fosters ambition and complete freedom to be themselves. Help them make their own success. Without you, their journey might be just a little bit harder.
If your child is ready to start an education in cosmetology, and you’re ready to support them through the entirety of their program, contact us to help them get started. Use our program page for more information.
