Joanne believes that trade shows are a perfect place for looking at new innovations in the spa and wellness industry. She encourages alumni to attend these events to be there to share what they are doing now as well as to look into other opportunities. They can find new skin and body care products, new equipment, and be able to serve clients at a higher level.
It is the perfect opportunity to learn about something you might not be aware of. If you are looking to learn something more specific about medicine for example, you can educate yourself watching the medical speakers and get clarity on whether or not it is right for you.
Joanne says these shows are all about networking and continuing to build your personal brand by attending year after year and making yourself known in the industry. It is a great platform for strengthening connections and building contacts. The shows are opportunities to put your name out there for jobs and opportunities in the spa and wellness world.
Different Types of Shows
It is important to know what type of show you are headed to. Some of these events are one day and others are over a weekend. At the shows, attendees can get access to the trade show floor where all of the booths are with the latest in products and industry innovations. Attendees can sit in on speaker sessions or be on the floor learning and exploring the booths. The floor is a great place to set up meetings with prospective employees or other individuals to partner with for future business opportunities.
Trade shows range from one to three days and they are normally hosted in convention centers. For more intimate and local community events, there are shorter events such as Spa Connection that will take place on March 6th for three hours for the Southern California community.
Spa Connection is just one example of the many shows that are available. Joanne points out that there is at least one show you can attend every month! The next big show for California students and alumni is the Vegas show. At least 100 students will attend from Bellus Academy.
Bellus Academy does a trip to Vegas with student rates available for participation. This show is a great one to attend especially for students looking for an opportunity to volunteer at a large-scale event, getting great exposure to spa directors. She advises students to go to Vegas every year for the next five years, and then work your way up to even larger shows.
Shows Coming Up
Joanne has been attending these events for many years and believes that if you are consistent in your attendance and participation, people come to know and respect you. You can become a part of the insider community and be seen as an industry leader.
