Barbering Foundation- 1,000 Hours
Our Barbering Foundation program trains students in the fundamentals of men’s grooming. Students learn both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise that covers barbering techniques, health and safety procedures, and business. Courses explore subjects and skills such as:

- Shear and clipper cutting
- Hairstyling
- Permanent waving

Students expand upon their education with practical experience in our supervised Student Salon and Spa, where students practice on real clients under the supervision of licensed instructors. Eligible students may also participate in externships with local barber shops, volunteer at community events, and take part in other off-site learning opportunities.
The Barbering Foundation program prepares students for the licensing exam administered by the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Professional barbers must be licensed to provide service in the state of California.
Program Schedule
- Day (7 months): Monday – Friday: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
- Night (10 months): Monday – Friday: 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm
At Bellus Academy, our barbering programs are available in a hybrid format, with both day and night course options. Students receive a tablet, which offers easy access to our digital learning platform, allowing them to complete theory coursework remotely.
Online theoretical learning is paired with on-site practical training. Our supervised Student Salon and Spa in Poway, CA, features a barbering floor where students can practice their techniques on real clients. In this setting, students use salon tools under the supervision of experienced licensed instructors. Students have the chance to develop customer service skills to take their service above and beyond.
